London Underground's new King's Cross northern ticket hall opened on Sunday (29 November) as work neared completion on a decade long £810m upgrade which has resulted in two extra ticket halls being built to serve the Tube station.

Following on from the completion of the western ticket hall and refurbishment of the old sub-surface ticket hall in 2006, the new northern hall doubles passenger capacity at the Underground station which now has four times as much ticket hall space compared to what was available prior to upgrade work starting in 2000.

Funded by the Department for Transport, the opening of the northern ticket hall means step-free access is now available to five of the six Tube lines that serve the station, with step-free access to the Northern line available from mid 2010. It provides a direct link between the Underground system and the Javelin high speed rail shuttle between St Pancras and Stratford International that will be used during the 2012 Olympics.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, and minister for London, Tessa Jowell, officially opened the northern ticket hall at King's Cross St Pancras Underground station on Friday (27 November), two days before it opened to passengers.
