Deutsche Bahn made history on 19 October by bringing a Siemens Inter City Express train from Germany to St Pancras International station following tests in the Channel Tunnel. The train formed the centrepiece of an event held to formally announce DB's plans to run passenger trains between London and Frankfurt by December 2013.
The train on show was similar to - but not the same as - the Class 407s ordered for the new London service. For example, the compartment at the front giving passengers a clear view through the driver's cab to the track ahead will not be a feature of the new London trains.
At the event speeches were made by UK transport minister Theresa Villiers, German federal minister of transport, construction and urban development, Dr Peter Ramsauer, DB chairman Dr Rudiger Grube and High Speed 1 chief executive Paul Chapman.
